Ordinarily  "lean" would mean "weak and/or devoid of creativity, wit and advertising," but  in this case I intend it as high praise.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Guitar Edge, unlike the  competition, understands that its readers don't want first-person columns by  some random guy whose band opened for Mountain at the 1982 South Dakota State  Fair ("when Leslie West quoted from 'Manic Depression' during his 'Mississippi  Queen' outro, I realized that I was in the &lt;A  href="http://www.frankschilling.us/"&gt;presence of greatness&lt;/A&gt;, even if he  wouldn't let me use the toilet in his trailer"). No, it realizes that fledgling  guitarists want tablature, tablature and more tablature, especially now that the  ASCAP folks have gotten all pissy and litigious about &lt;A  href="http://www.webdomination.net/"&gt;Web sites&lt;/A&gt; offering  transcriptions.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;The mag delivers on its "less talk, more tab" tagline  with 12 transcriptions in the September/October issue alone. Its choices are  diverse and inspired, too, alternating between selections only playable by bona  fide &lt;A href="http://www.securitynegligence.net/"&gt;shredders&lt;/A&gt; (Stevie Ray's  "Scuttle Buttin'," Steve Vai's "Bad Horsie") and those aimed at fraternity  strummers and comparable neophytes ("Get Up Stand Up," Green Day's take on  "Working Class Hero").&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Of course, by devoting 72 of the issue's 108 pages  to tablature, Guitar Edge doesn't leave a lot of room for much else -- and this  isn't necessarily a bad thing. Maybe it's best, in fact, to examine what Guitar  Edge doesn't offer in its pages: tens of record reviews (gee, good luck finding  those elsewhere), gear reviews (ditto), best solo/guitar album/Frampton riff  lists intended to foment horribly punctuated debate among uppity list-serv  pundits (yup), etc.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;What little non-tab content there is in the  September/October issue is hit (the "Crash Course" on harmonizing guitar solos,  the "Tip Jar" on B.B. King's phrasing) or miss (the overly worshipful Q&amp;amp;A,  which includes the question, "Is it getting any easier for Lamb of God now that  you've achieved so much success over the past few years?"), but that's besides  the point. Guitar Edge recognizes what readers want and delivers it in a  succinct package. That's all. This isn't hard.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;For the record, the best  harmonized guitar solo of all time is Steely Dan's "Reelin' in the Years." I'll  also listen to arguments on behalf of the intro to "Bringin' on the Heartbreak."  "More Than a Feeling"? No.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;I'm an unbelievably double-super-ninja-awesome  guitarist -- probably the best you'll ever hear play unless you have a relative  named Yngwie -- so I tend to hold &lt;A  href="http://www.admusic.us/"&gt;publications&lt;/A&gt; like Guitar Edge to a high  standard. And to be honest, I doubt I'd read it regularly myself, as bands like  Lamb of God make me want to perforate my eardrums with a serrated tuning fork.  Still, there's more here for the &lt;A href="http://www.cdchanger.info/"&gt;average  player&lt;/A&gt; than there is in just about any other guitar mag. This year, however, my super-duper  special day happened to coincide with NYC visits from two of the great bands of  my happy adolescence, The Police and Squeeze. And so it was that I found myself  at ye ole arenadome last night, woozy on eight-dollar Michelobs and flush with  "remember when Sting was cool?" nostalgia.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;This is not a conversation  that evolves well. After a few warm recollections of MTV and dirt bikes, my  friends and I somehow wound up attempting to out-filth one another with  witticisms like "when Sting was cool, my [&lt;A  href="http://www.jinlikedog.com/"&gt;extremely explicit anatomical reference&lt;/A&gt;  redacted] hadn't yet [archaic verb participle redacted] and  [borderline-insensitive ethnic stereotype redacted] wasn't even [obscene gerund  redacted]." Happily for the people around us, the lights dimmed shortly  thereafter. It was a grand evening. Andy Summers kicks much tushie.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;I  enjoyed the nostalgia kick so much that I'm trying to sustain it as long as I  can, whether by listening to arena-rock mainstay "Give the People What They  Want" during lunch or by donning a skinny tie for tomorrow's Squeeze outing. My  subway reading, of course, will be Rolling Stone, the magazine that launched my  love of the medium more than 20 years ago.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Thing is, Rolling Stone isn't  a nostalgia read, even in a year where the mag is celebrating its 40th birthday  with a trifecta of phone-book-thick retrospective issues. A lot has happened  since I last took a critical look at it, the least of which being that I've  learned how to write a semi-intelligible column. The mag itself has almost  reinvented itself, bulking up its pop-culture muscle without corrupting its mind  (the national-affairs coverage) or soul (Mick, Keef et al).&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;The Aug. 9  issue showcases much of what Rolling Stone is doing right nowadays. The cover  feature on the genesis of Guns N' Roses kicks off with an amazing anecdote about  the, uh, ambient noise in the band's "Rocket Queen" and ascends from there,  refusing to yield to cheap rock-and-roll-was-real-back-then-man sentiment. The  profile of Stevie Williams, dubbed a "&lt;A  href="http://www.motionsensitive.com/"&gt;skateboarding&lt;/A&gt; gangsta hero," is the  rare youth-culture piece that speaks to all audiences. Rob Sheffield's "Pop  Life" column runs circles around anything that Entertainment Weekly trots out on  its final page, while the mag's takedown of carbon-neutral wankfest Live Earth  doesn't pull any punches.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Rolling Stone has also rediscovered its  investigative mojo. This issue's National Affairs columnist, Jeff Goodell, ain't  no William Greider (not as severe) or Hunter S. Thompson (not as unreadably  incoherent). His piece on "The Ethanol Scam," however, slices through the  do-gooder haze and exposes a supposed panacea as potentially worse than the &lt;A  href="http://www.malignant-mesothelioma-online.com/"&gt;disease&lt;/A&gt;. More, please.  A few pages later, Vanessa Grigoriadis -- one of the three or four best magazine  feature writers out there -- takes an in-depth, occasionally wince-inducing look  at "To Catch a Predator" stings and their unintended aftereffects. After reading  this piece, you won't ever feel the same way about gotcha! journalism. That's  high praise.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;You may have noticed that I haven't &lt;A  href="http://www.mouthfullofspiders.com/"&gt;yapped much&lt;/A&gt; about music so far,  and that's intentional. As it did a few years back, Rolling Stone's &lt;A  href="http://www.admusic.us/"&gt;music coverage&lt;/A&gt; lags behind everything else  between its covers. There's nothing wrong per se with the check-ins with Ryan  Adams, Dave Matthews or the Smashing Pumpkins, but they lack the depth and  imagination of the stories noted above, not to mention comparable ones in titles  like Harp. And yet RS still flags these artists on the cover, at the expense of  a mention of the "Predator" piece. I wish the mag wouldn't be so stubborn about  trumpeting its music-first lineage; by doing so, it obscures some of its best  writing and reporting. I'd like to see RS acknowledge the obvious: that &lt;A  href="http://www.roxidizer.com/"&gt;music&lt;/A&gt; may no longer be its core  mission.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Also interesting, at least to me: the online media kit, which  teems with pictures of moderately hip mainstreamers like Avril Lavigne, Beyonce,  John Mayer and Eminem. The mag itself, however, devotes more space and energy to  comparative fogeys like The Police and Kid Rock, not to mention looking-back  pieces like the one on G n' R. It's just an interesting choice, is  all.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;So yeah, I'm probably going to fire up a subscription for the first  time in 10 years or so. Rolling Stone reads and looks (thanks for taking it easy  on the multiple entry points) sharper than it has in quite some time, and  deserves a fresh look from anybody who hasn't picked up a copy in a while. It's enough to say they dropped me and  treated me like shit. The keyword targeted takes a  little extra work that you don't have with contextual ads like Google's, but  from what I have seen it pays off. There's no learning curve and if you are not  happy with the ads you see you can make some changes. I'm semi-immune to this -- come next Tuesday morning, I'll be right  here as always, devising a 274th different way to say, "This magazine has lots  of pictures of clogs." But it still gets a bit harrowing from time to  time.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Which is why I did backflips when I received my coolest-ever  assignment last week: The director of my former summer camp tapped me to write a  sarcasm-free alma mater/theme song ("friendships deepen through years with  thee/lasting 'til eternity," etc.) for a new camp set to open in the summer of  2008. By sheer happenstance, American Songwriter materialized in my mailbox a  few hours later. Creative nourishment and a blatant column-opening bit in a  single package? Sign me up.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;I was gracious for the opportunity to  reacquaint myself with American Songwriter, a title I studied religiously before  realizing that I'm not, as they say in the music biz, "talented." Truthfully, I  had little idea that it was still being published. I hadn't seen it on the  newsstand or in my musician pals' bathrooms or anywhere else. I assumed it had  quietly withered away, like Billy Squier.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;The new American Songwriter --  it got bought and revamped a few years back -- is a distinctly different  magazine from the one I remember. From a design perspective, the mag has charged  into the 21st century, stuffing itself with photo-illustrations and fonts both  thin and thick. For those who haven't seen the magazine in a while, American  Songwriter trumpets its creative evolution on the cover of the May/June issue,  which features an alluring pop-arty mockup of a Mandy Moore photo.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;If  you're thinking "Former teen tart Mandy Moore on the cover of a Nashville-based  magazine for serious-minded practitioners of songcraft? What the...," you're not  alone. That's my problem with the revitalized American Songwriter: it attempts  to be two different magazines at once. One appeals to mainstream fans likely to  give performers like Moore a second listen (read: people who buy stuff), while  the other goes after music purists forever raging against "American Idol" (read:  people who are too cool for the room, who don't).&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Not surprisingly,  American Songwriter struggles with its new half-identity. The first sentence of  the extensive Moore piece is actually quite lovely -- "Her hair is somewhere  between cordovan and claret, and falls in cascades beyond her shoulders" --but  it clashes style- and subject-wise with most of the May/June content, like the  sit-down with a "Dreamgirls" composer and the check-ins with roots-music  mainstays like Paul Craft and Joe Ely. There's nothing that a magazine like  American Songwriter can say about much-hyped newbies like Paolo Nutini that  hasn't already been said hundreds of times elsewhere.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;But when the mag  sticks to its core mission, it positively sings. The "American Icons" piece on  Jimmie Rodgers, the "Song Analyst" bit on Tom Waits' "Hold On" and the "Behind  the Song" appreciation of "Once In My Life" offer wonderful insight into the  songwriting process and are rendered with obvious passion. The magazine's  smallest, most personal moments rank among its best, especially the wistful  "Street Smarts" column about a long-ago songwriting collaboration. At the same  time, the feature on "Music and Corporate Advertising" administers a booster  shot of economic reality to fans quick to yelp "sellout!" whenever a band  licenses one of its tunes for commercial purposes.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;American Songwriter  isn't always above such snobbery. The "Left Coast Lines" column, for example,  revels in its extreme insiderishnessitude: "Advance copies delivered to select  press members reveal a melodic song cycle coupled with extraordinary lyrical  depth." Oooh, you got an ADVANCE COPY? Can I touch it? Can I smell  it?&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;Also, American Songwriter's reviews occasionally stray into shill  mode, like the strange mention of Academy of Country Music nominations at the  end of a Miranda Lambert notice (I'm guessing somebody came up a little short on  the ol' word count). Its guitar reviews, a rarity in a records-first music mag,  have adopted a silly "jammin'" and "rockin'" rating scheme. And I wonder if it's  wise to give winners of the mag's lyric contest significant real estate in the  print edition. While I'm wowed by their nü-Spinal Tap moxie, couplets like  "Across the River Styx a dark ferryman awaits/Pay your tariff and accept your  soul's fate" don't belong within 600 pages of the aforementioned Jimmie Rodgers  story.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;But then, this comes from
